Localism and Inclusive Design

The article appeared in the Urban Design Journal, 123, Summer 2012, “Localism”.

This is an article written by Flick Harris and Jos Townend which explores the issues raised by the government’s localism agenda for inclusive design and changes in planning policies.

It identifies problems raised by government legislation including the marginalisation of equality issues, consultation and inclusive design frameworks.

The article uses examples from Manchester, including some of the disastrous issues demonstrated at Old Mill Street, while good practice, from some years ago is illustrated by the consultative approach at Wythenshawe.
